Why Survival Food Is Simply Smart

survival-food-thumb2Why is survival food a good idea? Survival food is food stored for when an emergency or a food shortage makes itself present. People these days are more concerned with the things going on in the world. Some people are taking advantage of this and making money with food reserves. These two reasons are why survival food is a good idea.

It is always a good idea to have survival food stored for when food is not available. If anything was to happen you always need a source of produce and vegetables to keep you and your family healthy. Without a source of food sickness and maybe death is possible. Survival food can make a difference when a disaster happens and you would be thankful you had stored food.

Survival food falls into four categories consisting of, kitchen, camping, emergency and up to twenty years from manufacture (not purchase) date.

Kitchen emergency food is simply stocking more of what you already eat. When shopping purchase several additional cans, bottles, boxes, packages, store and use in rotation so everything stays well within the expiration dates.

Include pantry items where space allows such as extra toilet paper, soaps, shampoo and hand cleaner, comfort foods, etc.

Camping food can be stored for emergencies. It does expire short term not much better then kitchen, but is usually freeze dried, light weight not needing additional ingredients besides water and spices to taste.

Emergency food is sold in bricks similar to coffee bricks, six blocks inside sort of like a coconut flavor candy bar. Good for at least five years when purchased fresh these are emergency rations you can eat for two to three days per person per brick. Store in the boat, car, plane, bug out bag, etc.

Twenty year survival food is well packaged and sealed intended to last unopened at least twenty years without going moldy, stale or buggy.

Some care should be exercised when purchasing so as not to be taken. Look past the claims of enjoying tasty food when everyone else is going hungry gnawing bark off trees.

In many cases you’re looking at two meals a day. Breakfast is porridge, cream of wheat or oatmeal. Powdered fruit flavored drink mix, coffee and creamer. Main meals tend to be low energy, mainly pasta and rice with dried veggies containing little if any protein.

Once over the hump of paying the initial price of twenty year survival food seriously consider upgrading to meals you might actually want to eat.

All survival foods should be stored in a clean cool dry place. Never mention you are storing food to anyone, if asked make nothing of it. Place two fifty pound bags of rice on top to keep curious noses out.

A Word About Rice Storage

If you’ve ever watched the TV show Survivor, you’ll notice that one staple that producers always give contestants is rice. Rice keeps you filled up and provides easy meals when other supplies are hard to come by.

You can make a wide variety of recipes using rice and it helps acts as a filler food with an emergency meal that otherwise might seem kind of skimpy, in case supplies are dwindling for you and your family or you’re playing it safe.

Should you buy white rice or brown rice? The choice is up to you. There are reasons to look into both. Brown rice is more nutritional, of course – so if health is your #1 concern, then it might be a better option for you.

But even though white rice isn’t as hearty in the nutritional world, it does offer a better storage shelf life. So you can rotate out the food stores less often than you would need to if you only had brown rice on hand.

Storing rice can be done in one of two ways – in large containers or small ones. Some experts advise you to store it in smaller containers for a variety of reasons. First, if pests get into a container, it would only ruin that one small batch and not an entire large container of food stores.

Second, if you need to carry it in a bug-out-bag, then a small container would provide for better portability. You can buy cans of grains already packaged for emergency use for this purpose if you want to.

For surviving in home, you want to store larger supplies. Rice typically has a two year storage shelf life. But some experts extend this by vacuum packing the rice into Mylar bags that have oxygen absorbers packets inside.

You can also buy or create buckets of rice that are sealed tight and built to keep out pests. Some companies allow you to buy large quantities, like a 6-month supply, but then you have to have enough room to store it.

Some experts advise you to put the bags of white rice into a deep freezer for a few weeks temporarily to kill any pest’s eggs that might be hiding inside the unopened container – because that often happens with store-bought rice and grains.

Storage should take place in a dry, cool area. You don’t want it stored anywhere that heat will ruin it. You also don’t want humidity to get the best of it. Keep it stored properly and it could last you up to 10 years or more.

When emergencies are announced there are always people who do nothing, yet are the first to beg for food, water and ice. If you feel you must share say with the nice old couple, do it anonymously otherwise within the day everyone will know you have food to spare.

People are more aware with the things happening in the world now. The economy and food prices going up day by day, soon food would be so expensive we would not be able to buy any. Natural disasters are happening way too often these days and its always a good idea to be prepared for one of these calamities because mother nature never warns when she is going to come at you.
