How To Defend Your Home

how to defend your homeWhen a survival situation happens, the odds are good that at some point, you are going to have to know what to do to protect yourself and those you care about. Whenever there’s chaos in an area, those intent on doing harm to others will look to find easy targets.

They will want to steal whatever the situation makes valuable from you, take your money or tradable items – and in some cases, cause you physical harm. For the sake of yourself and those you are responsible for, you need to be prepared well in advance.

As well said, the best time to plant a tree is ten years ago, the second best time is today.

Firearms are always the last line of defense, even if the first weapon we reach for. A gun isn’t always the best tool for the job, but is the only counter to an attacker who also has one.

One way to be prepared is by having the right weapons to defend your home. Remember that by the time someone is close enough to be able to grab you, the stakes become higher.

Persons intent on causing harm won’t care what they have to do to take you down or get you out of their way, so you want to put a stop to a hostile situation as quickly as possible.

This is why you need to have guns in the home. Sometimes, you won’t even have to use it in order to scare off people who intend to rob you or harm you. In many cases, all it takes is for the person to see that you have a gun and they will take off running.

Understand a gun only defends against individuals, not a gang or an army. Especially if other gang members can threaten another member of your family. The Thompson machine gun was sold to ranchers to defend life and property against murderous gangs coming across the Rio Grande. When properly used it can make one man an army of one and take on half a dozen lesser armed poorly trained foes, it can not fight off a larger group. For this you need to join or start and train a local militia.

You’ll need a gun that’s capable of long range shooting (such as a rifle) and a short range broad area scatter gun (like a pump shotgun) but you also want a smaller one such as a pistol. When there’s a police absent survival situation going on in your area, you should keep your gun on you at all times.

Besides a gun, you could also benefit from having a decent survival knife or machete as a weapon. You can keep these on you and in hand to hand combat, the sudden appearance of a knife can quickly convince your opponent to leave you alone.

Always be aware whether your weapon is legal carry, because you wouldn’t want it to become an issue when the authorities eventually reestablish control over the area. Some weapons are only legal for use within the home without a permit to take them outside or even if legal, considered a threat when carried out of context, say through a neighborhood instead of the wilderness.

Keep in mind forts no longer work due to the easy access to modern effective weapons in troubled places. A home can have some defenses such as concrete planters that can double as cover from small arms fire and steel doors that will take more then a kick to open. Still trying to fort-up only works to move the threat to the easier target of your neighbor, etc.

Sometimes, though, the best course of action is to hide – like when you’re facing too many opponents. Two to one or three to one are terrible odds and you could get seriously injured or be killed.

A safe room, hidden room or shelter can be a place for family to hide especially if someone remains above to conceal the opening or trap door. Settlers dealing with some of the worst blood thirsty savages history has ever known, would have a root cellar or tunnel with concealed trap door dug out below the cabin that doubled as a place to hide or move the family during attacks.

So if you don’t feel your chances of surviving a emergency situation is in your favor, then hide and remain hidden until the threat has passed. Teach your family members to do the same.

You’ll want to know how to defend yourself physically if you don’t have access to a weapon or makeshift out of common everyday items such as a tightly rolled up newspaper, umbrella cane, etc. Plus, sometimes, having a self-defense skill is all the weapon that you’ll need.

When you have the right knowledge and strength, you can use that to your advantage in a survival situation. The reason that it’s wise to learn martial arts is because it gives you a surprise edge in the event that you can’t get to your weapon or you’re outnumbered.

Martial arts can even the playing field when you are up against more than one opponent and getting a weapon or hiding is not an option. Not only can you benefit by learning the skills of martial arts by taking classes that teach karate, kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, Tae kwon do and more, so can your family members gain personal self confidence by taking such classes.
